Edition 2020 grantees
“I am so grateful to the Maan Grant team and friends who have supported me throughout this process.
Through this project, I listened to my dad’s stories about life in a remote village near the mountains of Kashmir. We collected the stories through which I gained much appreciation for how my grandmother and her family are deeply rooted in nature. After the storytelling phase, I was able to consult and connect with a contemporary miniature artist, Hana Shahnavaz, who guided me on how to plan, sketch and paint in Persian and Indian miniature style. She would help me break out of geometric and controlled thinking during the times I was stressed and connected me back to my playful self. After our sessions, I would be more observant about natural elements in my world; the trees, flowers, birds etc. The sessions allowed me to chill and create out of playfulness.
A big internal struggle I overcame through this was to set time aside to create for myself. It’s incredibly nice when you can look at your work and say to yourself, ‘this was good’. And then you let it go, because anything else is going to make you crazy, and anything else, you’re going to be trying to impress people.
One of my challenges was asking for help and reaching out. In sourcing the materials, I was being rigid, but then I looked for local places where I could get materials and found a myriad of local spaces that helped in getting the supplies. I am grateful to friends at The House of Traditional Arts for offering their space so I could make the pigments. That was a lot of fun.
This project allowed me to understand my family and roots better, it helped me gain perspective and it reconnected me to my child-like, curious self.
Thank you so much.”
