It Was Like A Dream...
With this first photographic foray, Dana Awartani presents an image from her award winning video installation I went away and forgot you. A while ago I remembered. I remembered I’d forgotten you. I was dreaming (2017) in which she celebrates the beauty of traditional Islamic design and architecture and offers a ritual that involves construction and destruction.
The video work was created by Awartani once she had completed the installation on the floor of an old abandoned house, located in the old part of Jeddah, where the artist's grandparent’s generation used to live. It shows her destroying the artwork by sweeping up the sand tiles as a symbolic commentary on the modern-day destruction of our cultural identity and heritage, which has been a result of a careless and an obsessive need for a more modernized and industrial society without the conscious awareness of what we are leaving behind. With this final gesture, the artist aims to highlight the importance of preserving and cherishing what in essence is a crucial part of the collective identity in the region, not as an attack on modernization, but rather pointing out the importance of the old and new co-existing and living together side by side.
The house that the artist has chosen to create the piece plays a crucial role in the artwork, as the building was a typical home amongst the wealthy local elite during the late 50ʼs and early 60ʼs, and it was during this time that buildings in Jeddah broke from traditional Hejazi architecture and adopted a more European aesthetic, imbued with forward looking notions of “civilization” modelled on a western ideal, and in turn completely abandoning their own cultural identity.
Awartani’s symbolism extends from what lies on the floor and what is projected on the wall that come together as a cautionary tale, contemplating the duality of creation and destruction, past and present. The artist seeks to raise awareness about the importance of celebrating and preserving the timeless language of geometric aesthetics as a universal language of beauty and harmony.
I Went Away and Forgot You… is in the collection of the Hirshhorn and the Guggenheim museums, and has been awarded the Instituto Sacatar Residency Prize. The work has been shown in exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit; Videobrasil São Paulo; Monash University Museum of Art, Melbourne; Jakarta Biennale; The Mosaic Rooms, London; 21,39: Safar, Jeddah Arts, among others.

مع هذه المغامرة التصويرية الأولى، قامت دانة عورتاني بعرض صورة من عملها التركيبي المميز للفيديو متعدد الوسائط سافرت ونسيتك... (٢٠١٧) حيث تحتفي بجمال التصميم والهندسة المعمارية الإسلامية التقليدية ، وكما تقدم أداءً يتضمن البناء والتدمير
تم إعداد الفيديو من قبل دانة بعد الانتهاء من تركيب العمل على أرضية منزل قديم مهجور و والذي يقع في الجزء القديم من جدة، المكان الذي عاش فيه جيل أجداد الفنانة. ويظهر لها بأن العمل قد تدمر وذلك من خلال كنس البلاط الرملي كرمز على التدمير الحديث لهويتنا الثقافية وتراثنا، وذلك نتيجة لإهمال وهوس الوصول الى مجتمع أكثر حداثة دون الانتباه والوعي لما سنتركه من وراءنا. من خلال هذه المبادرة ، تقوم الفنانة بتسليط الضوء على أهمية الحفاظ على ما هو جوهري كجزء أساسي من الهوية الجماعية في المنطقة، وليس كهجوم على الحداثة، بل إشارة الى أهمية الترابط بين ما هو حديث وجديد و التعايش جنباً الى جنب
يلعب المنزل الذي اختارته الفنانة دوراً حاسماً لإنشاء العمل الفني، حيث كان مبنى المنزل نموذجاً بين النخبة المحلية الثرية خلال أواخر الخمسينات وأوائل الستينات، وخلال هذه الفترة، انفصلت المباني في جدة عن العمارة الحجازية التقليدية، وتبنت الجمال الأوروبي أكثر، فهي مشبعة بالمفاهيم المستقبلية عن " الحضارة" المشابهة للنموذج الغربي، وبالتالي تخلت تماماً عن هويتها الثقافية الخاصة
تمتد رمزية عورتاني من مايوجد على الأرض، وماهو على الجدار, و التي تجتمعان معاً كحكاية تحذيرية، متمثلة في ازدواجية الانشاء والدمار ، الماضي والحاضر. تسعى الفنانة إلى رفع مستوى الوعي وذلك من خلال الاحتفاء و الحفاظ على لغة الجمال الهندسي الخالدة كلغة الجمال والتناغم

Artist bio
Dana Awartani’s (Saudi-Palestinian b. 1987, Jeddah, KSA, where she lives and works) aspires for the revival of traditional geometry and historical modes of making through crafts and artisanal practices which are enacted in the contemporary. Her practice stands within deconstruction, reinterpretation and repetition of a sign system, revealing immutable patterns with the intention of demonstrating the structure of meaning. Kaleidoscope-like, she maps unity as a fundamental Islamic principle – that of ‘tawhid’. Traditionally trained at the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts, she received her Masters after her BA at Central Saint Martins. She is furthering her commitment to the preservation of Islamic illuminations through the completion of an ‘Ijaza’ certificate.

درســت دانــة أســاس الفــنّ والتصميــم، وهــي حاصلــة علــى البكالوريــوس في الفنــون مــن جامعــة سنترال ســانت مارتنــز، ودرجــةالماجستير مــن كليــة الأمير للفنـون التقليديـة يف لنـدن. وقـد سـاهم ذلـك بتطورهـا إلى فنانـة تتركـز ّ عمليتهـا الفنيّـة حـول العمـل المستمرلإحياء الفنـون التقليديـة. وتكشـف عـن إضـاءات المخطوطات المعقدة والباركيـه والسيراميك والزجـاج المللون والزخرفـة المصغرةوالفسيفســاء
وهــي تســعى إلى تعزيــز ممارســتها وتطويــر مهاراتهــا مــن خلال اســتكمال شــهادة "إجــازة"، وهــي أعلــى رتبــة للإعتراف بهــاوالســماح لهــا بنقــل فــنّ التذهيــب الإسلامي
